Hierarchy Filter list in POV

Hierarchy Filter list in the Point of View

Definition

A Hierarchy Filter is a list that:

1. Can be used instead of the full or filtered dimensions in the dimension settings of a report

2. Can be multi-dimensional

CONTENT

3. Uses the Parent Child attributes to show as a hierarchy in the Point of View (usually used in Value Tree settings)

4. Can have non-default attributes like Reverse Sign, Format with specific scaling, etc.

5. Is filtered by Security when used in the Point of View

List Selection

All lists that contain the current dimension (listed in column 1 of the Report Dimensions dialog) will be available for selection in the report or template parameters.

These can be

a. One dimensional lists

i. Fixed

ii. Dynamic

iii. MDX

b. Multi-dimensional lists

When a Hierarchy Filter list is multi-dimensional, the list can be used for any of the dimensions that are part of the list definition. However a list can only be used once in the Report Dimensions. In the case of multi-dimensional lists the Initial Member value acts on either the member of the dimension for which the list is entered or the Custom Description of the list item. In both cases if the same member or description occurs multiple times, the first occurrence will be used.
If a Hierarchy Filter list is used on a Generic Template with objects that can change the POV, then it will only respond to the dimension to which the list is attached.

The selection from a Hierarchy Filter list overrides the Initial Dimension setting and the selection from the POV. This latter makes sense in case of multi-dimensional lists: If a list comprises dimension A and B and this list is attached to dimension A, then the Initial setting or POV selection of dimension B is overridden by the value of dimension B in the list (unless that member is set to @@CUR).

Selections of Hierarchy Filter lists in turn are overridden by item-selectors and row / column specifications.

Because a Hierarchy Filter list replaces the normal POV selection, @@CUR is not allowed in the Hierarchy Filter list for the members of the dimension to which the Hierarchy Filter list is attached. For example, we have a list with dimensions A and B. If this list is attached to dimension A (i.e., put in the Hierarchy Filter column of the Report Dimensions grid), then it is forbidden to have @@CUR for dimension A in any of the items. For dimension B it is permitted, In which case it takes the Initial setting for dimension B and / or the POV selection for dimension B.

Create a Hierarchy

To make Hierarchy Filter lists appear as a custom built hierarchy in the Point of View, select the Parent Member attribute in the list definition.

Add the List to the Report Dimensions

The new hierarchy is now available in the Point of View bar

List item attributes that will be taken into account for selections from Hierarchy Filter lists are:

  • Custom Description
  • Reverse Sign
  • Reverse Valuation (Accounts only)
  • Scale and Precision (from the Format)

The Top Member attribute can only be selected if one of 2 system defined lists (DescendantsExclusive or DescendantsInclusive) is selected as the Hierarchy Filter

Special Considerations

  1. Hierarchy Filter lists are subject to the same Security Filters as normal dimensional Point of View hierarchies. Security filtering is applied to all dimensions in the case of multi-dimensional lists.
  2. Formula-items are not allowed
  3. Drills are ignored
  4. Each dimension can only be used in one Hierarchy Filter list per report
  5. Dependent dimensions are not displayed in the POV
  6. Default selected item in the list can be specified by the Initial Member of the Report Dimensions
  7. The @@CUR is not supported either in primary or dependent lists
